The group recommended including the following data related to academic difficulty and leaves of absence.

  • Dismissal: A yes no field accompanied by a free text field that could include more information about the dismissal, including the reason.
  • Withdrawal: a yes no field accompanied by a free text field that could include more information about the withdrawal, including the reason.
  • Leave of Absence: an indication as to whether the leave was at the institution's request or a personal request on the part of the student. An accompanying free text field could include more information about the leave, including the reason.

The student's right to privacy and the institution's liability at disclosing too much information factored greatly into the group's decisions. In addition, the specification of fellowships, joint degree programs, and special studies under extracurricular activities obviated the need for further specification regarding student requested leaves of absence.

In addition, the group recommended that the formal curriculum group include a field indicating whether or not the program of study was lengthened along with a free text field for the reason and the capacity for the learner to explain the actions taken and outcomes.
