Simulator tracking system - something that tracks what happens in the simulator as a result of learner actions, ie IV inserted into left arm, pulse rate 130, etc.

Simulation evaluation system - ie something that faculty uses to evaluate learner performance in the simulation

Instructional system - a Learning Management System (LMS), Virtual Patient System (VPS), or other system offering learning activity or content

Learning Record Store (LRS)

Trigger event

A learner or team of learners participates in an activity that integrates multiple learning or simulation modalities or instances.

Success end condition

The LRS tracks learner participation in multiple learning or simulation modalities or instances as well as results or performance associated with each modality or instance as part of a single activity.

Assumptions

The activity/resource is capable of generating XAPI messages or has a companion application that generates XAPI messages.

The instructional system, simulator tracking system, and simulation evaluation system are able to send XAPI messages to the LRS; there are no access problems

The learner(s) is/are identified to the instructional system and simulation evaluation system.

The faculty and learner(s) are identified to the simulation evaluation system.

Description

The learner(s) engages in an activity that includes one or more instructional systems and potentially a physical simulator, such as a task trainer or mannequin.

Faculty uses a Simulation evaluation system to evaluate the learner's/learners' performance in the activity.

Each instructional system sends a message to the LRS to indicate that the learner(s) started or completed the activity. If assessment data is available, the instructional system sends a message to the LRS with assessment data (ie the learner(s) passed the specific test or received a particular score with respect to a certain competency).

The Simulator tracking system sends messages to the LRS indicating how the learner(s) interacted with the physical simulator, or a simulated clinical outcome that resulted from the learner's/learners' actions.

The Simulation evaluation system sends messages to the LRS indicating the faculty's evaluation of the learner(s) on specific points and any comments or supporting materials (audio or video) related to those points.

Instructional system sends a message to the LRS

Simulator tracking system sends messages to the LRS indicating how the learner interacted with the physical simulator, or a simulated clinical outcome

Simulation evaluation system sends messages to the LRS indicating the faculty's evaluation, potentially with supporting attachments or file references

Exceptions

There could be problems associating the different pieces of the activity with the greater whole.

    Actions from debriefing that may be useful to track:

    Debrief start time & stop time - some systems do facilitate the debrief session so an automatic post of these timestamps would not be hard. Educational relevance: much is made in the sim world that time spent debriefing should be at least as long as the sim activity - if so, we should track it. 

    Whether debrief was individual or group based. 

    Was there feedback from learner back to sim leader?

    Some video debrief systems allow you to scroll back through the video timeline, reviewing what was happening at key points. It would be great to be able to generate a similar graphic output to what you see if you use Google Analytics on some of your YouTube clinical teaching videos - this shows the most frequently watched segments and hotspots. So, if the video replay points, along with the activity timestamps were recorded, you should then be able to generate such a graphic output.
