The main idea of Confluence is to make it easy for you to share information with others; team-members, family, and friends. Confluence, at its base, was built on the principle of a Wiki.
A Wiki or wiki (pronounced "wicky" or "weekee", see pronunciation section below) is a website (or other hypertext document collection) that allows a user to add content, as on an Internet forum, but also allows that content to be edited by any other user. (from wikipedia)

- Creating pages and linking — One of the best aspects of using Confluence is rapid page creation based on linking.
- Email archiving — Confluence can archive emails - which is useful for tracking information over a long period of time and referencing emails in documents.

- Formatting Content — Confluence pages are written in a simple markup language based on Textile http://textism.com/tools/textile/. By using this simple markup Confluence makes it easy for your team to creating and share content together.
- Jira integration — Jira is Atlassian's issue tracking system. Confluence can watch issues created within Jira, allowing the integration of a content management solution with an issue tracking system.

- RSS Capabilities — RSS is a type of XML which allows one system to tell other systems what new information it has. It's generally used to notify others of the latest news which is available over a network.
- Search Confluence content — Confluence can search content including pages, blog posts, emails, Microsoft Word documents and Excel spreadsheets, PDF documents, and more.
- Source code — The source code macro is a useful way of presenting technical information to a group of users online. It's use is very straightforward. Any form of code can be included between {code} elements and we provide arguments for XML, SQL, and Java.
- Tasklist — The tasklist macro comes packaged with Confluence (since version 1.3). It allows you to create lists of tasks which need to be performed and keeps track of who has completed them.
- Thumbnail gallery — Confluence builds a gallery of thumbnailed images, attached to the page, by use of the gallery macro.
- Using Spaces — Spaces bind Confluence content together beneath a name. They are the containers for pages, blogs, and email.
