MedBiquitous Use Case Template

Use case titles

  1. A list of the use cases in this document

A description of a system or a role a person might take in interacting with the system. For example, a physician learner could be an actor, or a learning management system. List and describe all of the actors in your use cases here.

An ID unique within this working group, for example, CWG 1

Title that summarizes the user’s goal in the use case, for example, “Searching for learning at the point of care.”

List the actors involved in this use case.

Trigger event

If there is an event that precedes and triggers this use case, list it here. For example, the trigger event for a point of care learning experience would be “A clinician has a clinical question at the point of care.”

Success End Condition

If the user’s goal is accomplished, what is the end result? For example, “The clinician accesses learning that addresses her clinical questions.”

If there are any assumptions or prerequisite action that must be taken, list them here. The user having logged in successfully may be an assumption.

Write a step by step narrative description of how the user and system interact to achieve the end goal. This doesn’t have to be technical, it just describes what you want the technology to do for you. An example is shown below.

The clinician accesses the point of care learning system and indicates her clinical question or topic.

If multiple information resources are available, the system may allow the clinician to select which information resources to search. Alternately, the system may determine which information resources to search based on a user profile or system configuration options.

The clinician selects the appropriate information resources.

The point of care learning system queries the information resource and returns a list of relevant learning content to the clinician.

The clinician selects learning content to access.

The point of care learning system tracks the clinician’s activity, including what content or activity was accessed, the status of the clinician’s progress with that activity (complete, incomplete, score if applicable), and any other data that may be relevant for tracking purposes.

What are the important system to system transactions that might require standards? For example, “Point of care learning system queries information resources.”

What happens if things go wrong? Describe that here.

Potential Standards

If a particular transaction points to the need for a data exchange standard, give a general title for that standard here.
