Instructional system - a Learning Management System (LMS), Virtual Patient System (VPS), or other system offering learning activity or content

Learning Record Store (LRS)

Trigger event

The team of learners is instructed to or chooses to interact with a learning activity or resource hosted on an instructional system

Sucess end condition

The LRS tracks the team's use of the learning activity or resource as well as their results or performance

Assumptions

The activity/resource is capable of generating XAPI messages or has a companion application that generates XAPI messages.

The instructional system is able to send XAPI messages to the LRS; there are no access problems

There is a system that has associated each individual learner as being a member of a specific, identified team of learners.

The team has logged into the instructional system or is in some way identified by the instructional system.

Description

The team begins a learning activity or resource hosted on an instructional system.

The instructional system sends a message to the LRS indicating that the team started the course.

The team completes a portion of the learning activity or resource.

The instructional system sends a message to the LRS indicating that the team completed a specific portion of the learning activity or resource.

The team completes an assessment included in the learning activity or resource.

The instructional system sends a message to the LRS indicating that the team completed the specific assessment and the score the team received.

OR

The instructional system sends a message to the LRS indicating that the team passed the specific assessment.

OR

The instructional system sends a message to the LRS indicating that the learner failed the specific assessment.

Does the instructional system need to send messages indicating who is a member of the team?

Are there other things we want to track that should be captured here? Organization or site? the instructional system?

Transaction

The instructional system sends a message to the LRS indicating that the team started the course.

The instructional system sends a message to the LRS indicating that the team completed a specific portion of the learning activity or resource.

The instructional system sends a message to the LRS indicating that the team completed the specific assessment and the score the learner received.

The instructional system sends a message to the LRS indicating that the team passed or failed the specific assessment.

Exceptions

If the team does not complete the course or the assessment, a message does not get sent.

The instructional system is not able to send the message to the LRS; access is denied.

Could their be problems resolving team identity? activity or resource identity? Are there other exceptions we should document?
